Kimi steals show at FIA gala

A cheerful Kimi Raikkonen stole the show on Friday evening at the season finale gala of the Automobile World Federation (FIA) in St. Petersburg, the other winners.

Actually, the season finale of Formula 1 is unspectacular. But that was different this year. Kimi Raikkonen caused many laughs and Sebastian Vettel surprised.

Raikkonen staggered to the stage to receive his cup for third place. He missed one of the moderators, hugged his irritated Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel several times and greeted grinning with a thumbs up into the audience. "Kimi enjoyed the evening," commentator Nicki Shields said.

Even shots of how the 39-year-old smoked cigar and climbed over a railing with some difficulty and then returned to the square, made for amusement. Raikkonen had recently caused a sensation when he reported in his biography of earlier alcoholic capers. For example, the 2007 world champion wants to have been constantly drunk for twelve days between two races in 2012.

Vettel and his new appeareance surprised the audience. The German showed up in St. Petersburg with a mustache. Growing his beard was not "very difficult," the 31-year-old smiled. Whether the new look should last, Vettel did not reveal.

The highlight of the night was the takeover of the World Cup trophy by Lewis Hamilton from the hands of FIA President Jean Todt. Hamilton had previously skipped the press conference - allegedly because he had been unwell. The Briton had repeatedly made no secret of the fact that he is not a big fan of awards and media activities.
