Canelo Álvarez leaves Showtime to indirectly sign with Amazon
Canelo Alvarez has been known for making good business decisions as the race for leadership in the generation of sports and broadcasting through streaming platforms has become a forceful battle, meanwhile, Amazon continues its expansion in sports by buying broadcasting rights, and now they have landed a major account: Premier Boxing Champions.
Canelo Alvarez's fights will be broadcast through Amazon Prime
When Jeff Bezos' company announced a historic multi-year agreement for the services of PBC, they acquired a huge roster with more than 150 fighters, highlighting the presence of Canelo Alvarez, Gervonta Davis, and Terence Crawford.
After Showtime (PBC's current broadcaster) revealed that it would not continue in the boxing business and would not renew its contract, it was Prime Video raised its hand to acquire the broadcasting rights, which envisions having between 12 and 14 events by 2024.
The agreement reached between PBC and Amazon includes boxing events in the United States and several countries, although they did not mention how it would be for Mexico.
For their part, the so-called PPV will continue to operate as usual, so they can be contracted through Prime Video at an additional cost.
Canelo Alvarez's contract with PBCAfter breaking with Eddie Hearn and his promoter, Saul Alvarez announced in mid-2023 with great fanfare the agreement he signed with PBC for three fights.
In this alliance between Canelo and Premier Boxing Champions, the fighter from Guadalajara would receive around 100 million dollars, who has already completed the first fight against Jermell Charlo.
With this, Canelo Alvarez has two more fights left with PBC, who will now broadcast his fights on Amazon Prime Video, which are scheduled to take place during May and September 2024, with opponents to be confirmed.
PBC and Prime Video agreement In the shared statement, Amazon will exclusively stream a series of PBC Championship Boxing events, where they will showcase the best matchups between boxing's current and rising stars.
Prime Video will continue to expand its original sports content offering, with behind-the-scenes PBC docuseries, live weigh-ins, as well as on-demand access to past events, highlights, archival footage, and more.
"We are thrilled to join with Premier Boxing Champions to bring the world's best boxers to Prime Video and allow more fans than ever to experience these must-see events," said Marie Donoghue, vice president of sports content at Amazon.
